Acarichthys heckelii
Status within Australia: Generally available. Most LFS have access to this species.
Other names: Threadfin Eartheater, Threadfin Cichlid, Threadfin Acara
Characteristics:

Breeding Behaviour:
Quite distinct and not likely confused with other species as adults, may be confused with Mikrogeophagus when young.

Tunnel / Cave Spawner.
Comments: Acarichthys heckelii has a widespread distribution in equatorial Amazonia. Weidner discusses two types, one of which has a pointed head and was exported in the late 80's from Guyana, the other which is seen more these days has a more rounded head. In Australia there seems to be many fish which display a second or even third lateral spot. It is quite likely that someone is supplying the wholesalers here and have breeders carrying this trait.
